Ohhh Families Just Want To Have Fu-un

But sometimes the budget’s a little lean and all the fun stuff costs a million dollars…so it seems.

What do you do when you can’t afford to do all the things but still want to have a great time with your family?

You just have to simplify and get creative. Maybe even a little…Weird?

I think shunning overly expensive activities is cool anyway. It helps your family bond and teaches your kids you don’t have to shell out a lot of cash to have a good time.

Plus, we parents tend to overthink it when we consider what kids will find fun. Case in point, I just took a group of Cub Scouts on a grocery store food scavenger hunt. Didn’t cost a dime, and the kids loved it. (They learned some important stuff too).

“But Jared, I can’t think of anything to do.”

Ok, maybe I can help jump start the creative engine with 3 ideas that are fun for the family but not too pricey.

Here we go…

Go On A Treasure Hunt For Geocaches

Geocaching is a fun outdoor treasure hunt. Your mission? Find hidden containers. Other geocachers hide small items usually in weather-safe containers and report them to geocaching.com. Then, you use your smartphone to locate the hidden treasures. This activity is fun, unique, and will keep your kids active while they are staying curious.

Take The Family To A Pick-Your-Own Fruit Or Vegetable Farm

How about going to a farm where you can pick your own seasonal fruits and vegetables? You can  pick your own strawberries during the spring and summer, and apples and pumpkin during the late-summer and autumn. And once you and your kids have picked their favorite goodies, then you can have another fun moment making desserts like apple or pumpkin pie. That’s a 2-for-1 idea. No extra charge.

Rent Out Kayaks And Enjoy A Picnic On The Beach

Most cities are near some kind of body of water. In many places you can rent a canoe or a kayak so you can have a family fun day on the nearest beach.  Pop some lunches and drinks into a cooler so you can enjoy a picnic in a beautiful area of the town while getting some great exercise. If you do try this idea out, be safe. Be sure to read all of the safety rules and follow then when you get to the rental. But most of all, have fun.

So what are you waiting for?

Get out there and have fun. There so many more more unconventional and budget-friendly family fun day ideas to dream up. You just have to use your noodle. Hopefully these 3 ideas will get the wheels turning and your family can spend some QT together without a lot of added expense.
